When it comes to nature photography, National Geographic is certainly a trend setter and it has massively contributed to the developments in the field by constantly forcing photographers to raise higher bars. And it has done so for the past 123 years and we should indeed cherish its legacy.
Nonetheless, before the advent of the internet the only way you could’ve seen its photographs was in its pages. Of course, the space was limited and thousands of good photos never made it into the magazine. And that’s indeed a pity. However, during the past years, National Geographic has given the chance to both professional and amateur photographers to publish their photos online. After carefully reviewing all of them, the NGs staff decides to publish only one of them in its section called Photo of the Day. Although there is no prize whatsoever this is regarded as a recognition of one’s photography skills. Nevertheless, the annual Photo Contest fully compensates this by offering $10,000 to one lucky winner.
